You Can Teach Gun Safety with Airsoft Pistols and Rifles

by Chris L. Martinelli

What’s the fuss about airsoft guns? The mother asks, “Why is Anthony nagging me to get him an airsoft gun. Aren’t they dangerous? I heard that you could put an eye out with those little bb pellets! Why would any mother want their son to have one?”

What are those colored paint spots on our garage door? Could they be airsoft paint ball splatters for some neighbor hood child shooting at our house? I quickly learned that the airsoft 6mm paintballs are water soluable and they wash off with the hose and water.

Deciding the type of air-soft gun you will buy may be influenced by the power you want as well as handling and cost. There are hand held pistols, pump type rifles, and automatic rifles. The prices obviously range depending on the type of gun you choose and the features of that gun.

A young adult, teenager or some 10 year olds are perfectly capable of using the air-soft guns safely when started off under adult supervision. There has never been an accidental shooting by a properly trained person. Accidents don’t happen they are caused by ignorance and lack of knowledge.

A family who plays together stays together. Mothers and father spend too much time working, making money, etc., may be missing the joy of teaching their children about the importance of family outings, doing things together and supporting each other in their hobbies. It may be a stretch to try airgun outdoor sporting events for the whole family, but the rewards are great.

One problem is the amount of airsoft BB’s getting lost. You can buy the 2000 ammo jars with the self-loading tops. Some people prefer the square jugs that hold 4000 little BB’s, or even buy the 10,000-count bb’s in a bag.

You need to think about protecting yourself and your face from those BB’s flying over 300 fps. Those little round plastic balls can almost break the skin when they hit the bare flesh. You gotta have safety protection. Some people us only safety shooting glasses, while other use a goggle to cover the eyes, and the most safety conscious use the full face mask - just like they use in Paint ball competition.

Teaching gun safety is important when there are children in the household. Showing them how to handle an airsoft gun, and helping them to learn sound gun safety practices will translate over to real guns as well. Can airsoft guns teach children safety? We believe airsoft guns are the wiser choice in teaching safe gun practices.
